Default Diff, Trans or TC???

I came to a set of lights. I pushed on the gas and felt a clunk and it felt like the truck had lost some power. The clunk felt like it jumped into neutral for a second then popped back in to gear. I drove about 20 meters and pulled into a parking lot where it clunked a few more times. I then reved it in drive at 2000 rpm where it jumped forward about 2 feet, then wouldn't move anymore. I checked the trans fluid and it seemed a bit grey. I got it towed on a flatbed to a mechanic shop and when i put it into neutral with the steering wheel shifter it did not want to come off the bed. I then jammed it into neutral with the 4x4 shifter on the floor and it rolled of the bed nicely. Any suggestions on where I should start?

Since if rolls with the transfer case in neutral but not with the transmission, the rear differential is not causing the problem. Unless there is a clear shifter problem then you have to isolate whether its in the front end of the TC or the transmission. Not sure if there is much you can do short of removing the TC here for testing. Should be simple to isolate when the TC is separate from the transmission.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe the "grey" transmission fluid is a good sign...
