Default Need advice on tires!?!

So i am in the market for some new tires and wheel come tax return time and need some advice on some different A/T tires. Not to worried on choosing wheels but hoping some of you have any experience with some of the tires i am interested in.

i currently have the old version toyo open country a/t. they've done alright just the tread life doesnt seem very good. 21,000 miles (little over 2 years) and already about 70-75% gone with regular rotations. i know its early but i want to down size from the 20's that were on it when i bought it to a 17.

i currently do probably 80% highway and 20% dirt, maybe even a little less. i do plan on introducing it to the dirt a little more hopefully. but this is my commuter so i need the tire to do good on the highway and possible long trips. Also we can get some pretty good snow storms where i live (although were bone dry now) so need to be good in snow, ice, rain, etc.

Anyway, those a/t did alright but i am a little reluctant to go back to toyo but with a connection to a manager at a local les schwab that will give me a SMALL discount, one tire i am thinking is the new open country a/t 2 extreme in a 285/70/17. if any one has these i would VERY much like your opinion!

A few others i am looking into is the goodyear durtracs, cooper st maxx, and for the heck of it the terra grapplers. looking for something a little bit more aggressive but not an m/t. these all seem pretty aggressive (for an a/t) and will perform good on the road.

jeez i realize i just wrote a book but any help i get will be taken into consideration. Thanks

Too bad you didnt still have 20's. I'd sell you my Cooper LTZ's w/only 12kmi on them..

What is your budget? You have to make some sort of a compromise. You can't have great traction and great MPG's. Most semi-rugged tires are gonna hurt you in mpg's anyways. So, again...some compromise is needed.

I have goodyear wrangler authoritys. U can only get them at walmart. I have the 10ply ones and they have been the best tire hands down I've ever had!! They are pretty much the same as the duratracs only to me they look better and are alittle cheaper. $210 per tire for the 10plys.

Dont want to bring budget into this cause all its going to do is upset me haha. in other words, put budget aside for now.

Definitely wont go to an m/t. want to stay at a a/t type tire but looking at some of the more aggressive ones available. was hoping for some more feedback on the ones i mentioned. the duratracs are about as aggressive as i want to go.

Duratracs are nice tires but don't seem to last as long the heavier the truck you put them on. My tire guy is a Goodyear dealer and he tried to talk me into them. I'm still loving the Nittos and like that they are E-rated for when I want to tow/haul.

I have the toyo at2 tires and I love them. I don't have the extremes, just the stock size 20's and I have had really good luck with them.. I haven't had them very long tho. Maybe only 1000 miles on them.

I got a set of 265/70/17 Duratracs in October on my Dakota, so far I'm very happy with the choice. Seem to be good in rain & snow, although I haven't had them in deep snow yet. I had Cooper Zeon LTZs before these, and the Duratracs aren't any louder on the road.

I have 305/70/17 nitto terra grapplers. I'm almost at 50k miles but will be replacing them shortly. That size is 10ply load E rating with 65psi max. They are super quiet on the highway even when worn.

Just wanted to let all know....

E-Load tires generally have a much deeper tread than standard load and XL load tires.

So, if those Nitto's were NOT e-load rated, you would not have got that kind of mileage out of them. This is why you have some bashing them claiming terrible mileage while other claim great mileage. It's the Load rating. I found this out when I bought my Cooper's. Otherwise, i never really paid attention to the tread depth between the 2.
Example...
Standard Load AT3's have 12.5/32nds
E-Load AT3's have a MINIMUM of 16/32nds
