Suggestions? Might buy a 2004, 2500 diesel. pic included
Thinking about crossing over to the 3rd gen side. Currently I have a 99 1500 4x4 reg cab short bed, but its not quite big enough to pull my 30ft camper.
What are some things I should look at? This 04 2500 is a 5.9, 24 valve Cummins with 269,xxx. It has 10,000 mi on new injectors, 80,000 on auto tranny, gooseneck ball, 5th wheel rails, 5in diamond eye exhaust, and diablo predator programmer.
Here is a pic.
Guy wants $12000. How long can I expect this truck to last me? He pulls a 24ft camper, a lawnmower and used to pull horses. Is this a good deal? Any suggestions on what I should look for when I check this truck out would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure. If Ido a search on the vin#, will it tell me? The 2nd gen side of this forum is always active! Hey You, among a few other wrench heads, are always helping people out. I hope its the same over here on the 3rd gen side!
Yeah, the VIN will tell you and the owner should know. Follow that link I gave you, all the common problems were discussed...
I read the sticky on the main page about common issues as well. I'm kind of green when it comes to diesels. How many miles before you have to service the turbo(s)? Things of that nature. Injector life? Etc...
Injectors you can figure 150,000 miles although I've seen Cummins with close to 300k still running on orginals, the tranny, although light years better than the 2nd Gens usually last about 120k with normal use although I've seen non-towing CTDs with the originally automatic transmission last 200k miles.
Front ends are probably the biggest achillies heel but front end components are pretty cheap (ball joints, etc.) Steering box probably figure 200k.
I've seen Turbos fail at 35k and seen them be perfectly fine at 350,000 miles.
The price seems good if it's in the same mechanical condition as the picture shows it to be aesthetically. I got a buddy who went to look at a 2007 a couple weekends ago, 170k miles, really good shape, guy was asking $24k. Was listed on a Friday, he called and made plans to go Sat morning and if it was in the condition advertised, he was gonna take it if he could get him to take $20k. Time he got there it was gone, for the full asking price...
As far as the engine itself, I've personally met two people who put 1,000,000 miles on their Ram CTDs...
