Hammer's home-made mods thread (crazy pic heavy)
I'm big into making my own mods, always have been. To me, a mod is something that makes your truck unique, so if I build something myself, I know that nobody else with have the same thing. Yeah, some say I just make them cause I'm too cheap to buy 'em.
I get asked all the time either where I bought some of these or how to make them. For the most part, I've done DIY's on them, but I've never put them together. Here are the ones I've done on my two current vehicles:
The Ram:
"4x4 Hemi" vinyl. I designed & cut this one when I installed a Roland plotter/cutter for a friend who had a sign shop/t-shirt screening business as the 1st test cut.
Billet Radiator Top:
Sill Plates:
Stainless Winch Mount Cover:
Fairlead License Plate Holder w/ "HEMI" plate & Sandblasted/Color Match Painted Winch Mount:
Hitch Mount for Lights w/ custom switch for dual backup or continuous operation & Color Match Painted Rear Diff Cover:
On the Grand Cherokee:
Fairlead modified to accommodate Off-Road Lights:
Receiver Hitch Mount Light Bar:
Custom Wireless Relay setup for remote light operation & programming the stock HomeLink buttons to control lights from inside:
Power Plug under bumper for hot swapping of electric features on front receiver mounts:
And even though I've not made my own CAI, I've made about 15 or so for other people, so I'll include a pic of one of those as well:
I've got a few more in the works as well for both the truck and the Grand Cherokee, will add them as I build 'em...

I did this one this past weekend. Not much about it "home-made", although I was going to built it from scratch, I found that the $39.95 Chinese made "Hitch-Haul" clone was cheaper than buying 1 1/2" square pipe to build my own. I was only going to make the thing big enough for a cooler, but what the hell, the extra size would come in handy deer season as with this on the back of the truck I won't have to try to lift a deer up into the bed.
The only 'fabbin here was I welded on a couple of 1"x1" steel uprights for support and screwed on a couple of $5 PVC rod holders. I think I'm gonna put lights on it this weekend.
Obviously this thing will work on either the front/back of Jeep or back of the truck.
Oh and I almost forgot this one, this is completely "home-made". Rod holder for the Jeep:

Well thank you. I just come up with ideas once in a while or I see something I like but I think the price is stupid high. Like my rod holder for the front receiver.
I saw this in West Marine:
They wanted $179.99 for it, which I thought was crazy! So I set out to make one, then thought about some tackle storage or even a cooler. Then I set out to buy some 1 1/2" square steel to make it and found I could buy this chinese clone "Hitch Haul" for about half what I'd have in just the steel. So I picked it up and commenced to weld and fabricate on it and viola!
Added some 55w lights and a marine grade 12v power outlet, switched the lights with a manual cut-off so I could still use the power during the day.
I ended up with about $75 in mine, everything included and have what I think is a much more versatile setup than that deal at West Marine for $100 more!!!
