Default Auto tranny: Idle in Park or Neutral?

If I had to idle for an extended period of time (longer than several minutes), would it be better for my auto tranny to idle in neutral with the e-brake on instead of park?

IT DOESNT MATTER IF IT IDLES IN PARK OR NEUTRAL IT IS JUST WHICH EVER YOU WOULD PREFER. QUESTION THOUGH. WHY WOULD YOU HAVE IT IN IDLE SO LONG?

I probably wouldn't idle it for long periods if I could help it. I was just curious because on one of the Jeep message boards, they were saying that it's better for the TJ auto tranny to idle in neutral. In case the need ever arose, I just wanted to make sure I did what was bestfor the tranny in my PW.

Yea you can leave it in park... Just think ofall those AutoStart systems they make.... Most of them will run for up to 15mins before they auotmatically shut off... If your talking like 1hour + that is fine too... I work at a car dealership and we leave cars on all the time for they have dead batteries, it will not affect your transmission at alll.... Besides, its not going anywhere....

The Neutral setting serves two purposes. First, it lets you push the truck if it's out of gas. Second , it prevents people from doing fast shifts from forward to reverse and gassing it while the tranny is in the middle of doing what it's doing. Having said that, the manual says to idle in neutral but that's mostly so your parking lights stay on after the initial timeout.
