Electronic Rust Protection?
Does anyone use electronic rust protection? If you do, what is your experience and recommendation? Living in Canada where road salt is used rust protection is a good idea. I've seen two brands ... CounterAct sold by Canadian Tire and Final Coat sold by some car dealers. I'm sure there's more.

Hi Moodie,
I have encountered this kind of rustprotection in non-automobile applications usually for chain link fences. Cathode rust Protection orCathodic rust ProtectionI think it was called. It didn't seem to work all that great as we still had to replace rusty sections.
However with modern technology and improvements they may have worked all the kinks out. Let us know how it works out.
I live near the ocean, so here even Plastic will rust LoL.
I just have to stay on top of it.

Yeah, it's Cathodic protection. They place an anode on a steel gas line usualy at the meter and places in between and then bury it on the ground to drain the charge from the line. It slows rusting but does not prevent it. Usually the anodes must be changed out every few years as since they get the charge, it eats them up.
I have heard of something similar.....back in the day in my materials engineering course we had studied the anode/cathode effect, basically adding an anode to remove the dispersed electrons (i believe) which cause the iron to oxidize to iron oxide (better known as rust). By placing an anode on a car it should in theory prevent or at least reduce rust.
I have yet to try it out but was going to eventually. All you would need is a piece of zinc to act as the anode to be able to act as an anode for the entire car/truck...

Yeah. I had to teach my crews when they were marking a steel gas line to find the anode and remove it from the ground or the EM signal would immediately go to ground instead of traveling the pipe.
A truck would look pretty funny dragging an anode around. I'm not sure how that would work since a truck is insulated by it's tires.
