On-Board Diagnostics / Error Codes
I found a couple of posts here relating to the On-Board Diagnostic and error code procedure and I found there are a few variations. The one below says the check engine light will flash where another says an actual code will come up on the odometer display. There was also another post that said to hold down the odometer reset button while turning the key to the on position. I tried the ON-OFF procedure and nothing happened. I tried the odometer reset button and all lights and gauges seemed to go through a diagnosticcheck and some numbers came up on the odometer reading? What's this all about? Can someone clear up what works and what doesn't.
ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
1. Cycle the ignition key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON within 5 seconds. To cycle the ignition key ON means to turn it only as far as it takes to get the radio to come on. It does not mean to turn the engine on.
2. Count the number of times the "check engine" lamp on the instrument panel flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual codes. For example, flash-flash-flash [pause] flash-flash represents the code 32.

I have heard of the on-off-on procedure in most other vehicles, but not of the code coming up on the odometer... be interesting to find out if that is what happens... but I have an SC and that does all the code reading.

Have a check engine light? Then you should have a diagnostic code stored in your computer!
With the truck off and the key in the ignition
Turn the key to the on position
Turn the key to the off position
Turn the key to the on position
Turn the key to theoff position
Turn the key to the on position
At this time you will see any codes stored in the computer displayed on your odometer window, use the chart below to get a description of the code. If you need additonal help from there post it up in the Ram 3rd Gen section. If you just get the word DONE this means there are no stored codes in your computer.
If you want to clear your codes and you do not have a scan tool, disconnect your battery for 30+ seconds.
Note, early 3rd Gen Rams do not support this feature.
