Default 4X4 problem

I have a 02 25004x4 solid front axle. When Im using 4wd and turn slightly their is a clacking or popping noise come from front end. Doesnt matter what speeds Im at. 4wd drive dash light is on and transfer case if full.Nonoisesor problems when shifting in or out of 4wd. Seems to be ok if holding the wheel straight. Probally an easy one for someone who knows their stuff. Thanks for any ideas!

How many miles do you have on yours? I don't have any first hand experiences with the 2500HD, but sounds like a U-joint on the front axles. How often do you off-road?

Hi USAFJOE
Are you using 4X4 mode on dry pavement or good ground?
If you are, you might be experiencing transfer case binding.
Excuse me if I say, that when using this type of 4x4 system, you should be on a muddy slippy icy or sandy surface.
This gives the transfer case enough slipping in the wheels, to stop the binding problems associated with running this type of 4x4 system on a good surface. It's quite a different system to an all wheel drive, permanent 4x4 system.
If your not doing this and you are running on a poor slippy surface, it's a good bet that a UJ has worn.
Al.

Sounds like a binding issue if you are using on pavement or ground where the tires get traction. How long has it been since you service ther front diff or wheel bearings?

Not sure how the Dodge axles attach to the hubs,as Ihad a 1981 jeep that made a similar noise at a rear wheel. Turned out the wheel hub was spinning on the splined axle shaft when I turned corners.

Yup, on dry pavement you can only go straight. Otherwise you will bind and cause damage.

Read the owner manual.
