Navigation Unit and U-connect
2006 Ram, 2 WD, Hemi 5.7, Quad Cab
I have the Navigation/6 Disc changer/VES unit (Controls Back Seat DVD) head Unit. When I pull up a destination there is an option to call the number for the Location, but that function is Gray and I cannot access it. The dealer after not knowing what I was talking about said there is a U-Connect unit that can be purchased for $408.00. Can anyone tell me if this is the truth or if he is out to lunch? If there is such a unit what is the part number and can I install it myself?

The dealer is correct. I don't know if you can install it yourself. I do know that it is not the same set-up that comes with the factory install. From the factory U-Connect is integrated into the rearview mirror, whereas the aftermarket one is, I believe, placed somewhere on the dash. I have never seen the aftermarket one, nor do I know how well it works, but I can tell you I am very happy with the factory install on my truck. It's connects to your phone by Bluetooth wireless and has worked flawlessly for me. It has handsfree voice dialing and not only does the number for POI's come up, but you can input telephone numbers for User entered GPS addresses as well. Very nice. The only thing it doesn't do - if I had a wish list - is allow access to your mobile phone's address book and call lists. If the aftermarket unit works like the Factory, I highly recommend it.
