Default Simple MPG ???

Has anyone with a 3.7L V-6 / Auto trans Ram 1500 simply replaced the stock air filter with the direct replacement drop in K&N filter? I could care less about hp & tq gains. All I want to know is if someone has put this in ther STOCK truck and seen any REAL WORLD gain's in mpg.I allmost picked one up, as our local Advance Auto has them on sale through the end of this month for 25% off. Then I noticed ther claim on the box "Up to 10% better milage than a dirty air filter" . Key word here, than a DIRTY air filter. What if your stock filter was new & clean? Then hohw much better does it flow? I would bet a stock oem replacement filter would flow at least 7% better than aDIRTY air filter!
Just dont feel like thowing my money away on this if it is not worth it. By the way, I have NO plans to change the exhaust, nor will I spend $100+ for a cold air intake. Or a chip or anything. Dont mean it wont happen, I just have too many other hobby's of a higher priority that consume all of my remaining income.

And it takes an EXTREMELY dirty air filter at that !

If an air filter is clogged so badly that it is restricting something like 50-100 inches of water gauge...then your TPS sensor will tell the engine computer to go to 'Fuel Enrichment' sooner than it really should and it is true you can get slightly less MPG.

A typical new paper air filter will have a restriction of about 4-7 inches of water gauge.

The 'filter minder' on Cummins Rams will start indicating that the filter needs to be changed when peak restriction goes up to about 20 inches of water.

Think about this statement for a bit:

"As long as my throttle blades are partially closed even a little,
they create far more restriction than my air filter and its ducts.
I can measure this restriction with a simple vacuum gauge
or I can use a scanner to read my MAP sensor to prove this is true.
If I replace my air filter system with a less restrictive one,
in 'daily driving' that just means my throttle blades will close a bit more
to keep me at the same highway speed, because on gasoline engines 'strangulation' is used to limit the engine to whatever horsepower is needed."

If you are an enthusiast
you have probably read magazine articles where aftermarket air intake systems show gains on rear wheel dynos.

There is an important 'trick' that you should be aware of
and it involves dirty paper filters versus new cleanable filters.

You can ALWAYS make the new air filter system show big Horsepower gains on the rear wheel dyno, by simply taking the vehicle to be tested later first to a dusty dirt road and have it follow behind another vehicles for several miles so that its paper filter becomes clogged and restricted.

Is that $27 for the k&n, Or $27 for the Liberty intake pipe?I never thought about using the Liberty intake pipe becaus a freind of ours hasa Liberty 4X4 3.7L V-6and only gets 16 mpg. (But, I do not know her driving style)

I dont know if its the exact same engine and she might driving in 4x4 all the time. I still havent filled up, so I cant give you exact numbers. I still have a little less than 1/4 tank with 342 miles. I changed the muffler to the 40, I should have waited until the next fill up.
