Axle swap anyone?
Here's a question for all you 1500 4x4 owners. Has anyone or anyone know someone that has swapped out the IFS for a solid axle yet? I know that it gets done occasionally with the GM IFS trucks and was wondering if anyone has attempted it with a Dodge yet. Just from what I've heard, the IFS is a weak link with the Dodge's, especially with a lift and large tires. Just curious.
Havent done it yet but will be doing it when the warranty on mine runs out. No axle swap is all that difficult if you take your time and do the research. I hate ifs and there is no way any one can change my mind about it. Off road it absolutly sucks. On road it is a bit more comfy. Lifts are easier to design and the strength of a straight axle is so much better. IMO
People have talked about this before, and the concensus is it would be more economical to just trade it in for a 2500 or 3500 truck. I think it would be cool to try just to see how it would be. That and you could choose any axle you wanted. The main reason for me wanting to swap the front out would be so I could install either a Air locker, or electric locker. I know I've seen it done before but can't remember what the site was. Keep us posted if you chose to tackle such a project.
There are a couple sites that post some decent results of swaps that were done on durangos and dakotas. Get some good pics of the straight axle 1500's and find out what steering, axle, coil or leaf set-up they have and go from there. Baby steps and careful planning are the smartest things you can do. May have to do some good fab work to get the steering box in there as i believe you have rack and pinion as i do. It's fun stuff but be carefull. Dont want to half *** steering as that can cause you to be a safety risk on the road for others and yourself.
