Not being the butthole here, but what exactly do mean by not touching the sensor? No finger or skin contact or no contact period? If the second one then how do you clean it? Air? Aerosal?

 

What they are talking about is the pieces parts from the white ring to the tip. So the internal part of the sensor. The cleaner is usually an aerosol carburetor & throttle body cleaner. Just make sure the cleaner will not eat plastic.

As for K&N filters go ahead and slam all you want. I have used em since before most of you were born and never had problems.

Most people just don’t follow the instructions on how to properly recharge them, get in a hurry and either over oil them or put them right back in an start driving.

 

The blue end on the sensor is an epoxy coating over the thermistor itself. Wiping with a kleenex would remove oil and residue. This won't effect the calibration. Without the dirt it may allow for a hair quicker response time to the air going by.

K&N- What a name. This re-oil type design went out back in the 50's or early 60's. The lost cost and high efficiency of a paper type filter would seem to make most sense. No oil changes, no risk of getting it cleaned and then re-oiling it "just right". There are many products like this so called 'high performance' air cleaner. Marketing folks are a brilliant group. They make lots of dough figuring out what people will buy. Just like oil brands and other products that may not have an inherent advantage over a less advertized name. Seems to be human nature to follow and identify with big publicity and maybe a race car driver. If Tony Stewart. Peyton Manning, John Force, etc. didn't have the poor bastards that buy on faith and smooth talk buying some really marginal products, they'd be poor bastards also! That's just what makes the world turn though.

Now other than subscribing to the 'pied piper' theory of following the 'snake oil' salesman, why not use an air filter that is typically a $6-15 item every 15-20k miles, prevents dirt from getting past it, is easy to change, can be found in larger sizes for those that run very high RPM most the time and need a couple extra horse to win those unsanctioned races. Where would the current marketing group that owns the STP brand be without Richard Petty? If an outdoor idol or race car is associated with Skoal then it's must be necessary for a human to chew it to function. What has Skoal done for it's mouth cancer victims? An oiled air cleaner is just the ticket for 2 strokes like weed eaters or cycles. They are only built to last a designed number of hours. Actually, a foam unit would be better than oiled gauze. See the latest product ID tags on the mill.

It's all psychology folks.

In the mean time keep oiling those K&Ns. Do it just right to get all that extra power and dirt, don't forget to post the sticker proudly. You may be able to convince another novice to maintain the tradition.

1st Putting a Kleenex on that sensor oh yeah that’s a great idea. Hey let’s add paper particles to an already contaminated part, and since paper to you is the best filtration element known to man, what will those Kleenex particles do? What they do best I reckon, attract more crap until they get big enough to get sucked into the engine? You go boy!

2nd Go ahead and keep buying yer paper Wal-Mart filters. They're great for the environment! I’m sure the trash dumps are just full of old K&N filters because we toss em out2 or 3times a year you know….not

As for recharging one and getting it "just right" I'm so sorry if you can't follow instructions. Man I hope you don't ever have to change out a cam or any piece of precision equipment for that matter.Because you know you have to get it "just right" don't cha?

That's why I use panty liners, it traps all the crap and still makes my engine feel great without that "not so fresh feeling".

the high mileage example of use with a 'dirt hog' (boy now that name fits except when it ****s into the engine) without rings or valve replacement is a great feat. Not many can claim that with the risk involved. How often do you re-oil if you drive some on dirt roads?

As for the environment, there are lot worse materials land filled than an air filter. What about the oil used to re-oil and the poor gas mileage (more petroleum) when the grease ball gets clogged because it wasn't checked weekly?
