Which Truck?
Hello,
I am going to be in the market for a new truck within the next few months and I know trucks dont get good mileage. BUT I wonder which gets better mileage
I am looking at 2500 SLT quad cab's which is easier at the gas pumps, the 5.9diesel or the 5.7 Hemi ?

The diesel is definately better for gas mileage, and for lifetime on the engine. But one thing to consider is do you have the use for the diesel? It will cost more up front and maintenance is more expensive. If you have use for the diesel i would definately suggest going that route. If you dont really need a diesel though i would suggest the hemi, it is a very good engine.
I'm still in the looking phase and plan to buy sometime by the end of the year. I currently have an 03 QC 4X4 with a 4.7 liter engine.
Is the fuel mileage on the new Hemi's any better with that computer thing-a-majig that shuts off 1/2 the cylinders?
10K is alot more money for the deisel BUTthat'sthe direction I'm leaning right now.

As far as gas engines go, the 4.7L doesn't seem to be any better in the MPG department than the Hemi, so why settle for less power?
From a gas vs. diesel perspective, I have begun to really dislike my Hemi, a LOT. My next truck will definitely be a CTD. Better mileage, cheaper fuel, and gobs more power, what's not to like?
I know there is a significant difference in the price of admission into that club, but if you have the means to fit a CTD in your budget, that would be my recommendation.
Just my $0.02 worth........

I had an '05 Hemi and now have a '06 Cummins and '07 Cummins (don't ask it's a long story)
I am so much happier w/ my Cummins. I have more power when I need it (I do tow; but most of the time I'm just driving in town empty). I get better mileage; under the hood other than a Jake Brake I'm stock. Yeah my fill ups still cost me over the $75 limit (I'm in WA and our tax is rediculas) but at least I'm not hitting the pump twice a week anymore.
In my Cummins my oil changes last longer (on the 7K schedule cause like I said I don't tow much), they cost me more but it evens out in the end. Due to my Jake Brake my brakes last 30% longer or so; you can't do that w/a Hemi. I toss an aditive in w/ each tank because of the ULSD. I also change my air filter w/ each oil change because there is nothing uglier than a chewed up turbo. Other than that maintenace is pretty standard.
A Cummins will cost you more out the door but you'll get more out of it when you trade it in. Diesels just hold their value better. Plus if you want a truck you can run and run and run and run and run Cummins has a million + mile club - - I ain't seen nobody do that on a Hemi.
My best advice GO DRIVE them. Go to the stealerships and drive them both. You'll be plunking down for a Cummins in two heart beats (gotta say two cause the first time you press that go-pedal in a Cummins your heart skips a beat
)
