Running wire next to steering column
I'm about to install an amp in my truck, 2003 Dodge Ram, and had a question about running the power wire. Where the steering column goes through the firewall, it's got a big rubber grommet. Is it okay to poke a hole in that to run the power wire through? I'll be running a 4ga. I figured it would be, and it's easier than drilling where the cables for the clutch would normally go (automatic), but I wanted to make positively sure before I did something stupid. Thanks for any help you can give me.
It should be ok as long as youre not rubbing against the steering shaft. That will chaff through and short out your system.Try to stay as far twords the outside edge as possible and zip tie the wires up so they don't come in contact w/ any moving parts.I just did what you mentioned and drilled a hole through the plate covering the clutch linkage hole and sealed it all up w/ some silicone. Either way should be sufficient just be careful when cutting close to the column.
yeah, I knew well enough to keep it away from anything moving, and I wasgonna wrap it all up with some split loom and make sure it never moves. thanks for your help, it puts my mind at ease. I'm always a little nervous puttin holes in anything.
i thought about running my amp wire thru there but just couldnt convince myself nothing would happen being that close to a moving part. So I just went ahead and went thru the clutch linkage cover plate also...
