So did the engine actually overheat or was it just a guage malfunction

yeah, i know that trouble, i had to take my truck into the shop due to cooling issues. when they finished i took it home and on the way, all the way into the red for a few seconds, then back. i knew that they didnt burp it either, and it kind of made me question their ability for a while.

..the engine technically started to overheat until the tstat openned up...if yur seein this frequently, I would change out the tstat..it's a cheap piece anyways..

Your engine probably did overheat but one time won't hurt it. Sounds like you were watching the gauge and took care of the problem quick. Don't worry about it.
