Default Help please, we just couldn't give it up!

We need better gas milage. We almost traded our ram 1500 Hemi quadcabfor (dare I say it) a nissan xterra. We just couldn't give it up! Here's the thing, we live in the country and everything is 20 miles away. What would you suggest we do to help with the gas milage? We don't expect miracles, just need to do better if we can.
Thanks, Ron & Beth

I would say driving habits would be the cheapest thing to do. Drive like an old man dont run into town for a pack of smokes when you can buy a carton to last all week stuff like that. Then maybe some mods to help out even more.

Improving MPG is possible
but it is a battle of small improvements added together.

It takes old fashioned hard work, starting with some hours researching and reading about what works, and what is a scam.

Here's a very long read on the subject:

https://dodgeforum.com/m_447500/tm.htm

Best 'bangs for the buck'
are changing driver behavior
putting on low rolling resistance tires
and making the truck slip through the wind easier with aero mods.

Yep...................driver changes are the best ..............BUT................the hardest thing to change.[:@]
1) You must keep below 2000 rpm in EVERY gear!
2) Pick your road vision up. Use acceleration sense in judging traffic lights, on/off ramps and trafficetc
Easy on and off the gas. I know you might not believe it but, if you use the correct
acceleration sense, you can virtually eliminate the use of brakes.
3) Stop all heavy braking except for in an emergency.

I know it's all common sense and you propably will know all this stuff anyhow, but it really makes a difference and you'd be surprised how many people will preach it.....................but don't do it.
I get 13 to14mpg in town traffic and 18/19 on the highway if I do this but hey.....I run less than half price LPG so I don't bother ha ha ha.
Al.

depending on how much you drive, this may be an option. my parents have a f-350 dually for their business. for a long time it was their only vehicle, but they made the decision to get a toyota corolla to do running around and such. including the new car payment, and fuel, and insurance, they still save over $600 a month, but they do alot of driving.

Yep, drive like Grandma! We have a Small car we use for most trips to say extra miles on truck and gas milage. We are thinking of Mods. and what really works. Superchip? Flowmaster? Willing to spend some cash now to save later. I'm sure I'll do most of the work myself and leave the wax job to the wife.
Nothing better than watching your wife with red wax under her fingernails and her happy to have a Dodge!

Intake and exhaust will allowe it to breath better and will free up a mile or two here and there but people tend to give it a liitle more gasafter those mods so you really dontsee the gains,The biggest bang for your buck would be a programer for both performance and mpg. If you decide on only wanting one mod then get a programer it helps out alot.

What HankL mentioned about aero mods. If you do not have a cover for your bed, look into that as well. It will help on the short trips where speed is lower than hwy traveling. You won't have the bed and tailgate acting as a parachute. Tires too, look into that for the summer months, and if you have alot of snow then put back on the all weather tires then. As far as mods beyond that, exhaust, intake and programmer are going to be your best bets. Like it was mentioned above, the exhaust and intake will allow the engine to breathe better and the programmer will unleash alittle more power. More power, means less strain for the truck to get moving...
