Default Another question about codes po420 and po430

Took my baby into the shop to run the codes. P0420 and P0430 are the only codes that came up.......does that mean the cat is bad or the O2 sensors? Some background-we are in Germany, and I accidentally put Diesel in the gas engine.....I know not good! We drive the truck on the autobahn regularly, but the governer is still functioning and kicks in at 110, so I keep it under 105 most of the time.

Since the diesel accident, is it likely that gummed up the cats?

Driving it faster than I would in the states, can that make the cat run hotter thus burning out quicker?

THANKS!

Wow, that must have been one BAAAAD running Mopar with the diesel in it. You didn't mention how many miles are on the truck or how you resolved the diesel issue;did you drain the tank and then run the residue out with fresh gas or did you just fill it up with gas and run it out. Either way if you ran it at all you may have to replace both the sensors and the cat, I would start with the O2 sensors since they are cheaper and it's not likely that the remaining diesel residue in the cat will ruin the new downstream O2 sensor now but if the codes keep flying you will have to replace the cat as well. The sensors are fairly easy, the cat with Y pipe will make sure you say a few bad words. I want to say the sensors are in the $75 range each and the cat with Y pipe is in the $450 range for the parts but I could be mistaken. There is a special socket for the O2 sensors, it has a slot in it to accomodate the wires and follow the sensor directions, no silicone sealer, most have a sealer per-installed on the threads.

Thanks!

I ran it til it choked out as I filled it up from nearly empty with Diesel.....I had it towed to the garage, the drained and cleaned it, and filled it up with some good gas and drove it. The check engine light came on about 150 miles later. I will have the hubs see about o2 sensors, we are having issues finding a cat for it since we aren't in the states. The truck has 41,000 miles on it, and until this it has been my dream vehicle-every girl likes to drive down the street and have people take pictures of her in her truck LOL.

Thanks again for the advice!

I agree, replace both, but start with the O2's since they are easier and cheaper. I have another question though. How did you even get the diesel nozzle in the ram? In the states, you can't fit a diesel nozzle in a gasoline filler neck, because the diesel nozzle is larger diameter... I know because I almost did the same thing on accident. I think putting gasoline a diesel tank is more common in the states, since it works the other way around. hope you get your truck all fixed up soon.

The nozzle fit right in, here the nozzles are only slightly bigger(if at all) and they are on the same pump as the gasoline. I went back and looked at the pump after it happened and noticed that the diesel pump handle was actually under the beginning of the word Super because the pump signs didn't line up with the nozzles. Still a dumb mistake but it did make it a bit better.

Do you guys know if the the universal cats work just as well as the OEM parts?

Thanks

I think after you run it a while and really get the cat heated up, it will clean itself. It is not like you used leaded gas. That ruins the catalist. I may ever clear up the O2s. Have you really gotten it warmed up after removing the D.

I haven't taken it on any long trips since the light came on-probably 15 miles at a time tops-maybe I should take it for a longer trip-I have noticed that since I filled it up last time it has its "voice" back. I have flowmaster dual exhaust and for a while it was relatively quiet but now it sounds more like it's old self.

I ordered the o2 sensors and if we have to go with new cats the hubs plans on putting everything from the headers back to the cats on.

THANKS!
