Default hitch question?

I have a 03 qc 4x4 with the 5.9, and i just bought a 6x10 trailer to use for my business. Now this is my first trailer and first thing i have ever towed!! I got a 3.25 drop ball mount with the ball and a lockable pin for 24$ at walmart last week and i picked up the trailer the day after. Now the ball mount feels loose in the hitch after i have used it a few times. The ball mount says its rated at 5000 # gvw and 500# tounge, well the trailer is only 1000# and the tounge is
10 - 15 % of that . So do i need a better ball mount or is this normal to have the mount move around in the hitch. By the way the 5.9 is not that bad towing, i still get 12 mpg and can do 70 up hills with no problem!! Thanks for the help!!

It seems most ball mounts are somewhat loose and do rattle. You can try what tnt1036 showed you or you can build up the tube stock with a welder and grinder if you have access to one. I would personally just leave it be. It can’t be so loose as to affect your trailer handling. Red

Old farm trick for rattling hitch. Tap a nail in the gap, acts like a wedge, won't rattle no more. Just don't tap it in all the way or it's a beotch to get out, leave enough to get a set of pliers on it to slip it back out.
If you do tap it in to the head, stand on the tongue to take the pressure off and wedge a screwdriver 'tween the nail head & receiver to get it where you can pull it out. A 1 cent fix, been doing it for years.

As long as the ball is not moving in the mount you are okay. You can try different brands too. I have about 4 stingers, and they all rattle to different degrees. As long as it's not moving any more that a half inch or boring out where your lynch pin goes you are fine.

btw, my trailer is about 7000#'s i notice it more when i have smaller trailers on.

I tow a 26' Trailer 3500# empty, and a 12' box trailer. I use a Triball hitch and it does rattle more with the smaller trailer.... Experience has shown me that #1... the hitch will not fall break or cause damage. It is normal to have a little play in the hitch. Little being less then 1/2" play... #2 the lighter the trailer the more prone it will be to "bounce" and that bounce will cause you to hear the rattle. I've tried the farmer's trick (a pain cus it starts developing ruts in your receiver. I've tried ductape... wrap a layer or two around the hitch to reduce the noise... works but it wears off... i have tried many after market accessories...nothing seems to be a true fix for the noise.... I finally came to a simple conclusion.... it is a metal to metal join... .there will be noise. the receiver is designed for sheer (or pulling) stress....so your major stress point is on the pin holding the hitch in. the bouoncing or ratteling is just to give the hitch some play... it is never go to have something lock tight when towing... imagine if you had no suspension... everything mounted directly to the frame.... your truck would ride horrible... same concept... if you take the play out of the receiver... that movement has to go some where... it is transfered into the tongue and your rear axel.... That's my .02 any ways.... been towing for many years... and never had a receiver break, ball fall off, or anything like that... You will be fine towing the little trailer with the setup you have.
