I've been cranking wrenches all my life and I wouldn't do it myself either. I also wouldn't have the dealer do it - too expensive. Find an off road and 4 wheel drive shop with a good reputation. They'll charge less and do a good job.

I have 4.56 gears now. before it was 3.73. I get up to speed a lot quicker, but I don't really tow anything, I only have 35" tires, and its a huge difference between the two sets of gears. I have a lot more power now, and sometimes when it rains i get wheel hop. Having a straight detroit locker doesn't help either. I still have the chrysler 9 1/4, but my back end is locked all the time and I do get the clicking noise to compensate the turn,or thewheel screech when they just stay locked upin the parking lots. Iam very pleased with the new gears, and I had them done by Better Off-Road here in Oak Harbor, WA. I couldn't trust myself to DIY with the gears or the locker. Any questions, let me know. Hate to beat a dead horse, but I'm thinking about changing the gearing. I might buy an 02 4.7l off of my dad. My main reason for the purchase is to tow my boat, but that is typically a short distance. In the summer I'll be towing a good distance. The Ram has the 3.55 gears now and I was thinking about getting 3.92. The boat and trailer weigh just above 4000lbs. Should I get 4.10's? What would my non-towing mpg be with 4.10's? Right now my dad gets 14-15 around the city. I towed the boat in a fairly hilly area and got 11mpg with the stock 3.55's. I turned OD off, but it would hunt when climbing. Thanks.

I'm getting 4.56's installed next week. I have 3.92's right now, and with my 37in tires it feels about like 2.73's [:'(].My gas mileage is crap since I cant use 4th or 5th gear on any kind of hill.

I did some research, and with my tires and 4.56 gears it should be around the same rpm's that my truck wasat with stock gears and tires. I'm hoping it will help my mileage a little too.

Couldn't you get the dealership in your area to do it?
Many dealers won't touch the job. A good many won't do gears unless it's part of a warranty repair and at that, sub out the gears. They are that tough.
Best bet is a 4x4 specialty shop that has a good gear man on staff. They regularly see a lot of gear jobs as it is imperative to have gears done with most lift and larger tire applications.

Besides, as said before, even if you can get them to do it, the stealership would be the most expensive choice...
