20" Wheels
I have a couple of questions about the 20" wheel option. I recently purchased a set of 20's from a friend of mine. They are the factory Dodge wheels. When I went to the tire store, they told me the factory tire size is 275/60/20 (and tirerack agrees!). When going to the dealership however, they told me that the tires are way bigger than factory. What's the deal here? Has anyone else made this upgrade? Did you notice any difference in the way your truck runs?
Not sure on the size, I'll check after work if someone else doesn't know. I lost a little bit of power and braking going with the 20's. However my truck handles way better than it did stock especially on a winding highway. The little loss of power was well worth it for how much better the truck looks.
275/60/20 is the correct size for the tires. I upgraded my 2006 to Aluminum 20's off of a 2005 Dodge 1500four months ago. The truck looks much better. There was not really anything wrong with the 17's, but the deal was one I could not pass up. I did not notice a decrease in braking or power as the other reply posted, but Ihad not had the truck that long when I made the change. I do totally agree with the improved handling and ride. The truck takes bumps much better and handles better also. That is my 2 cents worth.
So here's the rest of the story. While I still had my 17's on the truck I took it to the local shop because of what I thought was a transmission issue. They checked it out and told me it was building up too much pressure before shifting and that I needed my tranny rebuilt. They don't offer loaners at this dealership so I told him I was going to have to wait until I could make some arrangements. A month later, after purchasing the 20's, I took it back to have it done. He called me last Monday and told me that there wasn't anything at all wrong with my tranny, and that it was actually the 20's pulling on the engine too much. He even went as far as too say that with his 16 years in the tire business that he knew there was know way 275/60/20 was the factory tire size. And yes, this is at a Dodge dealership. He told me that they voided my warranty. Needless to say I made several phone calls yesterday. Come to find out, any upgrades like that and it's up to the dealership as to wether or not it voids your warranty. And that's coming from 2 different people that work for the Chrysler service center. 4 other dealerships told me that I should be fine, but this guy wanted 116$ for reseting my speedo and my pinion factor. I'm going to make some more phone calls today and see what I can find out for sure about getting my money back!!! Oh, and I love the way they look and make my truck handle!!
