Default Diagnostic codes

I followed the procedure in the DIY section for obtaining the trouble codes for my 2004 RAM and it doesn't work. I know the DIY says that it doesn't work for early 3rd gen RAMs but does that include 2004 since it's the third production year for the 3rd gen? I remote started the RAM this morning and noticed the engine light as well as the abs and brake light were on but when I shut it down and restarted, the brake light and abs light went out but the CEL is still on.

I tried the on-off sequence with 3 ons, 5 ons and didn't get anything on the display.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I checked the gas cap and unless it's faulty, it's as tight as it will get.

Thanks.
