pretty sure mine has the 4 pin underneath also but everything i have is 7 pin anyway.
generally 7 pin is used for anything having trailer brakes. and yes in that case you will need the brake control box also.

 

I do have one complaint about the 4 pin underneath. It's not as easy to get to as the 7 pin in the bumper.

When I was shopping I test drove a F150 and it had a nice setup. The 7 and 4 pin all in one assembly in the bumper.

 

yea it is a lil bit of a pain but not too bad...

 

About 5 min's with a dremel and some adhesive you can mount your 4 pin just like a ferd...

I like having it underneath though. Cleaner install for my light strip, and i have absolutly nothing else that uses a 4 pin

 

haha cummins, thats what i meant. ok so the ball and drop bracket thing. so if i get the 7 pin adapter...basically the mopar harnessi would need a brake controller? isnt that harness just an extension of the brake light wiring? and then if i ever needed that 4 pin plug i could just un plug the harness and use the 4 pin.

I was just heading to the tractor store to buy a 7 to 4 pin adaptor when I read about the 4 pin plug under the bumper. Looked and it was there. Save me a few $$ and a trip to town.

were here to help manicmndy but mexi you only need a brake booster if the trailer you are towing requires it....

 

sweetthis is a lot easier then i thought it was. now i just need to get that drop and ball and the harness...maybe. and i can tow this piece of junk out of my life.

 

how would i go about getting a 7 pin for my truck? it only has the 4 pin undeneath and the new trailer i got is a 7 pin

 

i realize that this is an older thread, but being fairly new to DF i enjoy reading through these threads. bits of gold here and there.

one thing i did notice is one caution not mentioned, before you purchase a tail piece and ball. check out the trailer for what you need; 1-7/8",2" or 2-1/8" ball.

measure height of tongue on trailer, they vary considerably. you want the rig to be level. then measure your receiver from bottom of reciever to ground. (make sure the surface you are parked on is level) then allow for 1" of sag when the trailer is attached.
look for a tailpiece when the ball is attached is at the right height.

select the ball and the tail piece to match the weight of the trailer you are going to pull.

the weight capacity is stamped on the ball and on the receiver. do not exceeds the rating of ball or receiver with what you are hauling. like a 2-1/8" ball can be rated up to 14,000 lbs or as low as 5,000 lbs.

having had different Rams i have about a half dozen different drops and ratings.

good tail pieces and ***** are expensive, so make sure you have the right size and drop.

one thing to remember is the chrysler standard hitch package is rated at 5,000 lbs unless you have an equalizer (weight distribution) hitch, then it has a rating of 12,000 lbs
