Rear End Selection !!!!

If you have a LSD/ trac loc rear end you should be concerned. Does not matter the gear ratio. All of them are doing it.What is happening isthe clips that hold the lsd clutch platesis slipping out of position.Ifthis happens to your rear end and goesunnoticed it canwipe out your entire rearend. I have been changing my gear lube every year checking to make sure the clips are in position. As we speak my truck is in the shop being retro'd with an Auburn. I just can't take the uncertainy anymore. Thanks Dodge! You have scored another high mark in my book!

How much is this costing you? Is the dealership doing the work? What did you choose to replace it with?

I am using a local shop that came reccommended from a fellow dodge truck forum member. The Dodge Dealer for me isthe very last resort!
Idecided on the Auburn LSD rear carrier.I figured if Iam getting into the rear diff, Iwould do it right and get rid of the stock 3.55's and upgrade to 4.10s. At the same time I thought I would get some spicer u joints as well.(4 in total)Well I haveapprox $1100.00 in parts and this job was quoted at approx8 to9 hrs. So 550.00 bucks labourbrings me to $1650.00. Probally a little more something always happen. So lets say 1700 bucks.I say great lets do it.So the shop pulls the rearcarrier finds loads of rust inside the axle tubes.Instead of trying toclean it and risk taking out the new bearings. We determine it best to pull the housing from the truck and sublet it to clean the rust.Well never saw rust like that inside axle housing! So more labour there! To make matters worse the Auburn Rear Carrier I bought appears to be used! (Supplier is suppose to make it right, so don't ask where it came from!) Had to order another Auburnlocally. SoI have more cost there!
So, I don't have final price yet. This job is definitely more than I bargained for!

I have a question that may seem stupid, but if my c clip breaks, which is what I think you were talking about Big Guy, well if it breaks will I need to get new gears again or are they going to make it through the break. And am I going to know right away when the C-Clip breaks? Is there a way I can tell with out going inside of the housing?
when i found out that the clips on mine broke, i took it to the dealership (under warranty) and they had to replace from wheel to wheel, ate out carrier bearing, f---ed up the spider gears and everything. i did not know that anything was wrong until i did the differential service at the 45000 mile mark, and boy i was glad i did it.

Well. It is my understanding you could possibly go many miles with broken clips and never know it, depending on the severity and if the magnet catches all the metal debris. In this caseyou would have to pull your cover and check your magnet formetal debris.I have heard that the clips can slip out and tear upthe housing as well.If the magnet does not catch the metal debris you are sure to have imminent failure and could possibly wipe out your entire rear end. In that case you will hear it. If you guys poke around the internet you can find really good pictures of this!Keep a good eye on these!
