Default factory steering wheel wiring

My 07 Ram did not come with the steering wheel mounted audio controls. I would like to add them, but I need some info to see if this is a job I can do myself. Can I just buy add-on controls, or do I need to buy a different steering wheel with the controls already mounted? Is the truck pre-wired for the audio controls even though there currently are none? A friend of mine has an 07 GMC and he had the some questions. He found out he needed a different steering wheel with the audio controls, but all the needed wiringwas done at the factory regardless of whether or not the truck actually had the steering wheel mounted controls. I'm just wondering if the same holds true with Dodge. Thanks for your help.

I'm in the same boat as you. If you do go ahead with changing out the steering wheel you will have to remove the airbag, not something you should do unless your are 100% sure you know what your doing as it can blow up in your face. I would recommend having the dealership do it for you, shouldn't take long at all for them.

I'm also curious if my truck is pre-wired to run the audio control steering wheel.

Hopefully someone will respond soon. I thought at one time that Alpine made something that attached to the wheel and had some wireless remote setup type of thing.

I am in the same position.

You will need a new steering wheel and then the two switches. This will all run about $240 and then the dealer wants a $140 to do the switch.

I am planning on doing this switch next week when the parts come in. After I do I will post instructions if you guys are interested.

What are the switches that your talking about? Are they the ones that actually go into the back of the wheel. My Durango had them and they are awesome, I really miss having them on there, makes changing stations so much easier and safer.

PS: Can you provide some pics and part #'s when you have a minute, if anything the part numbers. Thanks so much.

The two switches I am talking about are the right and left switches that go into the steering wheel assembly. When you order the steering wheelthe radio switches don't come with the new steering wheel.

I figured that was what you were talking about.

When you get a free minute, I know I already asked, could you send me the part #'s.

I'm going to call around a few junk yards this week and see if I can get lucky and find a wrecked 07 to pull these parts off of.

I installed a leather wrapped steering wheel with radio controls in my 07 QC 1500 SLT Big Horn and they do not work. I have tested the radio switches on the wheel, they are ok. the cruse control works fine but noradio contol. My truck did not come with the infinity sound system.

Any one know what's up, I have read that the Body Control Module has to be reporgramed with a star scan to tell the truck the controls are there to allow them to work. Can anyone confirm this? anyone do this mod on a CAN Bus truck?

and yes the clock spring had a connection for the controls

I'm pretty sure you'll have to have them use the StarScan tool on it to activate it. I had to stop by the dealer today to activate my fogs which I put in after the fact. I now have the fog light symbol in the gear indicator area that shows when they are on, so cool. Oh yeah, it cost me $45 to have this done, a bit of a rip off but considering that they could of charged me for a full hour of labor, the minimum charge, I got off lucky and I'm happy.

Anyway, just call up the your dealer and tell them what you did and they will probably be able to tell you over the phone if that is something that has to be activated or not, or at least they will get back to you.

Hi guys,

I have the same problem with my Dodge RAM 2500 LARAMIE 4x4 2008. First of all, we have to install 4 mopar spare part, Wheel with audio control holes, both switches and harmes. I have all part number (If you need those i can email to you). I installed as instructed, but it does not work. The problem is: we need to reprogram the cluster, with a new firmware.

I talk with chrysler support and ask for VIN number. The answare was "this model track was not build with this option". I ask for chrysler engeneering asnwer, but I'm still waiting.

In the mean while, I'm studing the problem. The cluster should convert multiplexing signal to can-bus signal, that understand the factory radio. The http://www.crutchfield.com/site have several accesories to comunicate wheel audio control to radio, but with can-bus signal. Our problem is that we need can-bus signal after cluster connection.

Maybe we can call to http://www.crutchfield.com/guys and ask for solutions.

If i found any solution or news about it, I will share with you.
