Default bad gas milage

hey guys, i was wondering what kind of milage i should be getting out of my truck. i have an 05 dodge ram 2wd quad hemi with 20' wheels. im gettin really crappy milage. i checked the air filter and its clean. i just put the k&n filter in about 2000 miles ago. im getting between 8-10 in town. thats kinda bad to me. i have good driving habits so i know thats not the problem. i didnt know if you guys knew about anything that could be going wrong under the hood? should i put it in the shop? ( its under warranty) would the warranty cover checking it out? Please let me know, i need some help here.
Thanks!!

Most people who've purchased the Jet report a degrading of performance and fuel economy, so ditching it is a good idea. Winter blend gas will also lose a mpg or two on you as well. Even without MDS that's in the 06+ Hemi, you still should be getting much better mileage. Don't underestimate the importance of a good tune-up with fresh fluids all the way around. The use of synthetics will also aid in fuel economy. Also, check the throttle body, a dirty throttle body will impede the flow of air greatly and have a large impact on both performance and fuel economy (a search on the forum will provide you with how to properly clean it) also a faulty EGR valve is a prime culprit and a fairly inexpensive and easy replacement.

They're not exactly removeable"chips" anymore...pcm memory now-a-days is flash based like your mp3 player. There's handheld programmers that plug into the OBDII port and flash a new tune in...in some vehicles the programmers also show live data of all the sensors (TPS, IAC, MAP,MAF,o2's..etc) that aid in fine tuning. You can also get a dynotune through a professional...but you have to pay for dyno time along with the tune which is expensive. Depending on where you go the price ranges from $400-$500 and a good tuner will tune future mods for free....you just have to pay for the dyno time around $50.

If you are a heavy modder, as I am, then hold off on the tuner purchase. It's true, the best product currently available is the Superchips, but the company did an about face and will not support "custom tunes", SCT has a product for the Hemi that is soon to be released and will support them. The company has a solid products for many other engines, so they haven a proven track record. If you are just a cat back and maybe CAI type, then the Superchips "canned tunes" which is basically a "one tune fits all" type product would be a good purchase.

I have an 05 4x4 with 4 doors hemi. I am thinking about mild modifications. YOu say the super chip is the most likely a better fit.
No mods yet, bone stock. I am leaning towards a program change and cat back exhaust.
The local dodge dealer is selling the Daytona style cat back for 599. NOt sure where or what type computor mods. Currently getting 12 mpg around town and with a very lit foot 16 on the high way. The shift piont are longer then on my 03, the 03 seemed to short shift but the 05 almost has you let off the thottle to shift up.

ANy help would be gratly apreciated, on a budget pay off kids college.

hey jmsfulton, on my truck, i have a a flowmaster 40 series thats dumped right before the rear axle. its a single in/dual out. it sounds pretty throaty. i like it alot. ive ben reading up on the whole chip and programmer thing. it seems like a bully dog power pup is the way to go. on ebay they go for around 300 to 400 but ive seen them for sale on this forum for about 200 to 250. they claim to add 30 hp and 50 torque, which is a pretty good gain. i had to jet chip and i do not recommend it at all. the superchip seems pretty good too. you also might wanna look into a cold air intake. or something like that. its all up to you. as for me, im holding out for the 09 models. i cant wait to have a truck the comes stock with 380 hp mmmmm daddy im pumped!! anyway i hope this helps you out.
