Questions about Differential and Gears
I'm going to order new gears in the next couple of days....
, but I have a few questions I want to be sure of before I order them.
I have an '04 Ram 1500 4x4, 5.7 hemi. Stock gears are 3.92 per the glovebox sticker.
1: What is the differential size. I think the rear is a chrysler 9.25 and the front is a Dana 44. Is this right? If its the 8.75 rear, will it be the 489 or 742 case?
2: I have 37in tires, so Im going with the 4.56 gears. Since I have the 3.92's now, I wont have to change anything for the new gears to fit right?
Sorry if this question is asked a lot. I tried a search, but couldnt come up with a definate answer.
Thanks
Jon

I have an '04 Ram 1500 that came with 3.92's. Perfectly acceptable gears with the stock tires and even the 33's I put on shortly after buying it new in '04. However, when I installed a 4" suspension lift and went to 35's it was another story, so I went to 4.56s. Very happy with them.
1: Your rear diff is a Chrysler Corporate 9.25 made by AAM, your front is a Chrysler 8.0, Dana's were discontinued after the '02s when DC decided to go IFS on the front ends (bad decision IMO).
2: 4.56s would be the obvious choice for you, and you won't have to change anything, but I'd strongly recommend a master install kit (preferably with Timkin Bearings).
Do yourself a favor and find a REAL GOOD, EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONAL to do the install, and then follow the proper break in procedure to the "T"...

I got my Genuine Gears at 4 Wheel Parts, chiefly because they have an installer with a very good reputation in their Orlando store. I worked out what I believe was a very good deal on the gears, master install kit, an Auburn Gear LSD and the labor.
If you have someone that will do a good job on the install and are looking to just get the parts needed then I'd go through either them, Air Ram, Moe's or Randy's Ring & Pinion...

Thanks for the links, that helped a lot.
Apparently there arent many people that know that dodge doesnt have the dana. I even called summit tech support just before i read your post, they even said it was a dana. Now I dont have much experience with them on trucks, but they seem to know what they're talking about with cars.Just to be sure, I looked at the front diff. and its definately the 8.0.
Theres a good shop here in town that will be doing the install. I had my fill of doing gears when I tried to put some in my 76 camaro. I was seriously ready to burn the car before I was done. I dont remember how many times I had the axle out before I finally got it right after a friend had to help.
I'm definately going with the master install kits with all new bearings. I dont want to have to pay someone to do this again next year just because I was stingy on the bearings. Hopefully I'll have them in and installed by next week.
Just one more question, how muchof a raise in RPM's will I have with the 4.56's? I'm guessing somewhere around 300 RPM's.

Yea, that's a pretty fair guess. I don't remember what speed it was driving at, but I remember I paid attention with the cruise on the highway on the way to get the gears/LSD done, I was taching about 1850. And after the gears went on and I babied them for a couple hundred miles, I drove the same speed and was at about 2200...
