Default back up camera

Just wondering if anyone has installed a back up camera. I just bought one but it didn't come with instructions on how to wire. I assume it can't be that hard, but any input could help.

I got one but it is a woreless camera. Kinda sucks. Trying to find a location on the back of the truck where there is less interference and the picture comes in better.

As far as the wiring goes you should have a 12V supply to the camera and a 12V supply to the monitor. The camera can be wired directly to your parking lights and just make sure your lights are one to turn on the camera. The monitor, since it is in the cab, can be wired either to your cigarette lighter or run the wiring directly to your fuse box. If you have a wired camera for monitor, assuming the wire is long enough for your truck, just run the wire under the frame and tie wrap up. The wire supplied should be heavy duty to handle the weather and what nots and should not give you a problem.

Let us know what kind of camera set up your looking at and better advice can follow.

I have a camera that is installed under the rear plastic spolier lip thingie on the tailgate. There are 4 "holes" in it where the screws are to hold it on. I just had them drill a new hole, right in the middle and stick the camera right through it. Nobody ever notices it's there and I have a great picture and view. It's awesome, and it can be adjusted to give me an overall view of what's behind me, or point straight down on the hitch. During boating season I have it point straight at the hitch, so it's easy to line up the trailer, but otherwise I have it be just behind me. Anyways, I have a little switch I flip near the parking brake and it turns on the camera and LCD monitor, which is in my visor. That way it works with or without lights, and in reverse or drive. I love it and it was under $500 installed.

I have a backup camera that is mounted into a plate frame. It is wonderful. I can see everything! it is a wide viewing camera so i can even see everything behind me.... The driveway is 10' across and the camera is about 3' to the end of the brick. I will try and add pictures...

I don't like the mirror idea, the area is too small to have a good image, But it is setup so it only comes on when put in Reverse.

I have one that is mounted on top of my hitch receiver. There was just enought space for me to build a metal box and attach it to the hitch. I can see everything that is behind me and can back up to my boat trailer by myself without my wife standing back there going "Come on, come on, come on. BAM!!! ok that's good". I ran a power wire and the camera wire under the truck up to the front and into the cab by prilling a hole into a plastic piece that was covering a hole in the firewall. it was right above the pedals on the firewall and worked perfect. I wire tapped into my cigarette plug that has power only when the truck is running. grounded the neg- side to the chassis in the back by the hitch and the video cable up to my radio (flip out screen)

I didn't like the stock cameras, like on the Avalanche, that are tied to reverse, b/c if you overshoot the trailer just a tiny bit and want to inch forward, you're blind again. Mine points almost straight down at the hitch so you can easily tell when it's lined up, in reverse or drive. Our Hummer has a screen that pops out the side of the rear view mirror when you put it in reverse and it lays out the projected wheel path so my wife won't run over the malibu lights.... but it SUCKS for hooking up the boat.

I bought the fram at the local audio shop for $80. I ran the wire myself to the head unit. Total Cost $80 and 1 hour. This was back in 05... price may be different today.

I agree... that is why i went aftermerket... It is wonderful.. it is angled just right so i can drop my trailers strait onto the ball. Even if i overshoot the hitch i can see it and by how far too... (number of times i have had to get BACK into the truck to reposition = 0 Zero) it is great! Even though it is "tied" to the reverse, it is just a convenience thing. I can go in anytime manually to turn it on reguardless of the gear. I just change to that input on the screen and it stays on. Fun to play with when driving down the road... you can see how close people really get to you when your at a light...
