MDS question - capabilities?
I had a thought about MDS. Why is the Hemi only MDS capable. It seems like the new 4.7L could be ethanol and MDS capable.My5.3L Silverado was this way.
Does anyone know any reason why this would not be possible? It seems like it would be a great idea. And if it is possible, what things would have to changed or adapted to do something like this. Just kind of interested.

both Mercedes and Honda have cylinder cut out systems on overhead cam drive engines.
MDS is a way to slightly improve highway speed MPG
on large dispacement engines
without using a high overdrive gear
that would have to downshift to climb hills
which annoys many customers.
You don't get much MDS benefit on smaller displacement engines like the 4.7V8.
You don't get much MDS benefit when the vehicle has a CVT transmission
(Dodge Nitro, Nissan Murano, etc)

Another item, aside from the minimal gain is dodge would have to increase the base model, providing the MDS was standard, price. This being the case the price would be pretty close to the bone stock Hemi model which would make many members ignore the 4.7 MDS and get aHemi with MDS instead. So the bottom line Dodge would pay for this minimal gain and end up not making the profit like theyhad hoped for.
