mainly because your year was the only year with a 5.9L engine...The older model trucks had a 5.9L but when dodge switched to the new body style they left the engine the same...Except in 2003 the dodge brought the 5.7L hemi instead...
Yea, it's the only year a 3rd gen had the venerable old LA 360 in it.
Don't fret about your engine though, I had a '98 1500 with it and it wasa solid, dependable workhorse. The basic design of that old LA powerplant has been around since the late 60's or early 70's and is based on thesuper dependable 318!
It's HP and fuel economy numbers pale in comparison to the 5.7 Hemi that replaced it, but it's Torque rivals the Hemi and they have always been known to be ultra reliable, many times lasting through four or five Chrysler tranny rebuilds over a couple hundred thousand miles.
