Basically the c-clip problem isn't actually the c-clip. It's the retaining clips that hold the rear diff clutch pack together. It's only a problem for the 3rd gen trucks that came with 2wd and the 9.25 LSDrear. I had to replace mine because I found a busted retainer when I did an gear oil chg. It can be difficult to detect. Mine was operating fine and I have no idea how long that peice was in the bottom. I could tell it had been a while by looking at the color of where it had broken off. It depends on where the peice falls while the truck is in motion. If it gets in to the gears you could totally destroy the entire rear end. All you can really do is to do a good inspection when you chg out the gear oil or check it as soon as you notice some kind of diffrence in how it is operating, or if you start to hear noises. its been hit or miss as far as detection. some get grinding, others getting no noise at all. mine sounded and felt like a crowbar stuck in the R&P gears, lurched and grinded horribly, others have had no grinding but found the entire axle housing in need of replacment due to the clip chewing into the side of the housing,
