Rather than a locking fuel cap, I went with this:

i like my mercury, you got to push the button inside to get the fuel door to open to get to the gas cap... that should be a standard on all cars now a days (i guess the criminals might just start using a prybar though)

Yeah, that happened with my '04 Jetta. Awesome car if it wouldn't have had so many damn little problems. I called both VW dealers within any sort of radius, and they couldn't get me in for FOUR DAYS, even under our circumstances. Did I mention that I was nearly out of gas at this point? Without any way to open the fuel door? Luckily a backroom worker at Cracker Barrel (hey, we were hungry!) had a small toolkit and was able to help me take my inside door panel off. I ended up leaving it loose on the bottom, and whenever I needed gas I had to reach my hand up into the door frame and fish around for the hanging button. Good times.
We made it all the way up to Pennsylvania like that... where I promptly traded it in on my '05 Ram!

Well, like most things illegal that is BS.
I will say though, if you were careful, in other words take 2 gallons at most, it would be hard to detect.
