Default Synthetic oil change...

Ok... i'm sure this question may have been posted before but I didn't find anything exactly related while searching the forums.

I have a 2003 1500 SLT Sport and it has about 110,000 kms (68,000miles) and i'm the second owner as of a few weeks ago. From what I can tell it's been on dino fluids throughout but has no leaks. I'm about to pull the diff plate and see what things look like. Do you think it's ok to change over to synthetic fluids in the diff and the engine with this many miles on it? I've changed over to synthetic on other vehicles but usually within 6 months of owning from new.

Any advice would be great!

Scott

Many folks switch back and forth at will. The diff came with synthetic anyway and is specified in the manual. I use synthetic where it's specified, but dead lizards where possible.

Yes, you can switch with that many miles with no problem. When you are switching something with 68,000 miles to synthetic, they recommend changing the new synthetic oil after 3,000 miles (which maybe you change it at 3,000 anyhow) the first time. Synthetic cleans the inside of your engine a lot better than conventional oils do and this "quick" change lets you get the "dirt and sludge" that the synthetic oil has loosened up out of the engine and filter. After that, you can go to a normal sythetic interval of 6,000 or so depending on how you use your truck. Hope this made sense, if it is cofusing please let me know, I can re-word it.

Makes perfect sense! I've run synthetic before and have a fair amount left over when I bought a bunch on sale. So it's good to know I could still use it. I was worried about blow-by and seals etc. as it's different from conventional oil but I'm sure i'll be fine.

Thanks again
