Default Burning up my Cats!

Hi Guys,

I am on my 4th or 5th cat on my 2005 Ram 1500 Hemi. I have a Volant CAI and a Volant Cat-back exhaust. About every 8-12 months or so, I get a check engine light. It has been the cat every time. When I take it in to the dealer, they cover it under the emissions warranty. It's back on again and it has only been 6 months. The last time it went in, they claimed to have replaced a bunch of sensors. But this is ridiculous! Anybody have any ideas why? Every time the light comes on, the only error is the cat error. There are no other error codes. Dodge can't seem to find anything wrong! I also have an intermittent stalling issue, but that may not be related. It hasn't stalled in about a month. It only seems to stall when it is idling or barely touching the gas.

Thanks!

i dont know why it keeps doing that, but getting rid of the cat may save you some troubles. i tried getting mine out today, but the damn bolts that keep it on are just about impossible to get off, so im gonna try cutting the bolts off next weekend and taking it off. im not gonna cut out the cat and put in a straight pipe, im just gonna drill/break all the stuff inside, so it will have the cat housing, but nothing restrictive inside.

Analyzing mode on:

Cats burn out because the fuel mixture after the engine is still too rich and cat is working is azz off to burn off that extra fuel. That is where the sulphur smell comes from if you have it.

If the engine is running too rich, it will set a different code. AND, it shouldn't only run rich on one side with the mods you mentioned.

I believe the 05 has 2 cats, one on each side, correct?

Couple of questions;

Are you using stock Champion plugs?
Are you using full length wires?
Do you run WOT a lot?

Then the exhaust gas expands inside the housing, and has to re contract to get thru the hole at the other end. If you are doing this to pass the visual inspection, I would cut the cat in half lengthwise, weld in a piece of pipe in its place, and weld the 2 pieces back together over the pipe so it just looks like it's there. Don't forget to get 2 MIL eliminators so you don't get a check engine light.

maybe, if what he says is right, then that could be causing the problem with your truck stalling. it might be running to rich. just a guess

Running too rich typically kills cats.
