SPARK PLUGS
hey, I want to change the spark plugs in my 03 ram 1500 w/HEMI, but I cant get to the plug in the back on the drivers side. The master cylinder is right on top of it. It would be great and a big help if anyone had any tips. also I am not the most mechanicly inclined, so please don't tell me I have to pull out the engine or take of a fender or something like that.
No, you just have to be a contortionist. A flex spark plug socket helps. Use short wobble extensions. Most people go in under and behind the master cylinder. Just in case, remember -- there are sixteen plugs.
I took the front tires off and dropped the front end on the ground - that made it considerably easier to get to the back - just from a height perspective.
Take the air hat off - it's just a couple bolts and makes things waaay easier to get to.A short extension and a ratchet - it wasn't a big deal.

pm horseapples, he changes them at the track and apparently does it within 20-30 minutes...

I just got through doing them today on mine... and total time to take everything apart and put it all back together again was about 2 1/2 hours for me with all the right tools. Used the Bosch 2 plats because nobody had anything else around me and to top it off I still had to go to 2 different stores to end up with the total of the 16 plugs. I had 56000 miles on the originals and I would say they could have lasted quite a bit longer because they looked fine, used but fine. I think Chrysler is just trying to scam us with the 30,000 miles required change. And honestly I cant tell any difference after the change in performance... so whatever. I say unless your having spark issues, dont bother changing them till at least 60k miles or your just wasting time, effort and money.

it is not reccomended that you use platinums in the hemi as they can ping... but the reason for the 30k rule is because all trucks are used differently. A daily driver truck or a truck that cruises along the highway arent going to need much changing but a truck that is towing often and working hard need the changes more often... my plugs were pretty bad at 30K but i tow at least once a week and haul things rather often as well... its all about the chores the truck is doing..
