Default Lift on a 02

Got a 02 Ram 1500 Quad cab, with the 5.9L. Want to put a lift on, looking at 2-4 inches. Was wanting some tips to do it right. Never lifted a vehicle, just restored some hot rods.

Did you have to do any tranny upgrades when putting on the suspension lift? I am running the torsion bar set up to. I'm only looking to go the highest of 4 inches.

No, and a good kit will come with everything you need. If you are seriously looking at 4" of lift, I highly recommend looking at the Rancho 4" Suspension kit. I drove a lot of trucks with suspension kits, as I only did body lifts prior to this truck. I found it gave a much more stable ride both on and off the pavement.

i'm also looking into 20" rims. is there a tire size you would recommend or would you recommend a smaller rim? I dont mean to sound amature, i've only done restoration on older cars. This is my first truck build-up.

No doubt about it, larger wheels have the better look, but are not functional off road. For good performance off-pavement you want as much sidewall as possible. I had 35" tires on 15" wheels on my 2nd gen RAM and wish I could go smaller than 17's on my 3rd gen. You need the three f's off road: Flex, Floatation & Footprint. This cannot be achieved with the relatively small sidewalls on larger wheels. Unless you have a solid front axle truck and are talking like 38's on 20's or something like that...
