Default resistor in IAT

has anyone tried this resistor trick?

so i bought one of those resistors off of ebay that go in the IAT that people selling it call 'a super awesome turbo power chip'. I paid the $4 (with shipping) cuz I didn't know what resistance to use. figured i'd just try it. my voltmeter said 3.3kohms for those of you who want to just go buy one for 50 cents.

anyone have anything good/bad to say about it, if it worked or not? did it/will it hurt anything? it supposedly tells your pcm that the truck is always getting air at a cold temperature. it's not like the Power Wire that makes it think it's 20 degrees colder. it just makes it think it's always 20 degrees or so.

it made the CEL go on, which i think should go away in a day or two.

Why wouldn't you just install a 180* thermostat and install it. Then you get the benefits of the PCM thinking it's about 20* cooler (because it actually is) AND you actually have a cooler running engine!!!

how does the thermostat make the intake air colder? and a colder engine isn't necessarily a good thing. you don't want it to overheat, but running colder isn't good either.

it is easier to run the compression up, advance the timing and simply control detonation with colder enginetemps, which is why people do it.

I have one in my SRT. The higher the resistance the cooler you make the computer think the air is going into the engine. This results in the PCM pumping just a little more gas into the engine which equals sustained power during hot days.

It does not increase power, it just reduces the amount of power loss due to hot air.

I bought a 5 Ohm resistor from radio shack, $1.06. According to Roe Racing the 5 Ohm resistorfools the computer by about 20 degrees. Cheapest mod I have ever done.

see what you're doing is different than what i'm doing. mine is supposed to just stick the resistor in the iat, and do not reinstall the iat. sounsd like for yours you need the resistor and a functional iat, so you would ahve to stick it back in? you could just put the resistor in series with one of the wires in the IAT and it would make it think it's running cooler. did you mean 5 Ohms or 5 kohms?

You want 4.7 kOHM -- the k is extremely important! You can get a pack of 5 at any RadioShack for a dollar.

Also, connect it inline with one of the temp sensor wires, not across them. You should have no code if done properly.

This mod works by advancing timing, period. You get extra fuel too but the fuel learning cancels that out after driving a while, leaving only the timing.

I wouldn't do the mod described by the OP. The truck does compare intake temp with the ambient temp sensor and if it's too far apart, it triggers a CEL. You can do major damage by telling the computer it's 20 degrees outside on a 100 degree day. Stick with the gains from the "regular" mod.
