Default od off

When I asked about the 2nd gear shift I also meant to ask if anyone drives with the OD off. The dealership told me to leave it on which is why it goes on when you turn the truck off but a couple of people told medriving in town with it off will make my tranny last longer. Whats the consensus on this? As far as my previous post i'm still interested in the answer on this one as I just took the wifes 08 for another spin and it is shifting smoother than mine especially into 2nd. Please advise.

i drive with OD off in the city...because i hate when i'm going like 40, and it drops into 4th...and i have no power whatsoever, not necesarrily because i think it will make tranny last longer.

something i always do though is use my parking brake, especially when parking on an incline. for example,. you park in someone's driveway...you throw truck in park, then let off brake before you get out, and your truck falls forwards/backwards just a bit, then stops abruptly. i don't think that can be good. i engage the parking brake as soon as i get where i am, THEN, i put truck in park...so the weight of the truck isn't sitting on the drivetrain, it's being held by the brake.

If you want mileage, then leave it on.

If you want more response then turn it off.

But only at in town speeds, otherwise you will will kill the mileage.

i know this a little off subject but when it comes to the parking brake I was told that when you come to the spot where you want to park you put the tansmission in neutral while still pressing the break pedal, apply the E-brake then put it into park. Supossedly it takes the weight and stress off the transmission. This is what I was taught dont know if this is true but I keep doing it.

Well Andrew...... Your transmission is designed to hold the truck on a hill....most people don't belive in parking brakes... i use mine when on a steep hill.. other then that... don't worry..... it'll be fine...

Ever since I went from the 265/70/17 tires to the 305/70/17 tires I drive with the od off when I am in town. I still have the stock 3.55 gears and with the larger tires my truck wont shift into od until around 53 mph. My truck also runs lower rpms when I turn my od off in town since it is not trying to reach that next gear.
