Default Windshield Replacement?

Has anyone here got a windshield replaced before? Are the windshields ribit ed to the body? On our Camry the original windshield was ribit ed to the body and they had to drill them out. It's time to get a new one causethecrack isgetting really big now... andI will be making a claim onour insurance.Just been putting it off cause of my bad experiences in the past. One time they brought the wrong size for our Chevy, they noticed it when they attempted to put it on after taking the old one off. Also, has anyone had the stealership replace it? I was wonderig if they would do that.

I have never heard of a windshield being rivoted to a vehicle. I myself have replaced several and they are all tarred on.

Cliffnotes version of replacement:
Pry off plastic outter ring with smooth flathead. In some places they will be snapped to the next piece.
Get yourself a guitar string, pierce it through the black tar and run it all around the windshield, sometime this needs to be done twice.
Gently pull the windshield out
Clean all excess tar off
Replace with new tar strip (bought at any autoparts store)
Put on new windshield
press in plastic ring around windshield
wait for cure time and then water test for leaks

If you have a windshield company do it for you, it will take about 30 minutes for them to do it. If you do it, maybe an hour.

No windshield was ever riveted to the body of a vehicle, only the moldings are riveted (ie: Older Camrys, Lexus RX300, Lexus LX470). The windshield for the 2002-2008 Rams are fairly easy to do. Its will be a lot easier for a professional installer to do it though (I'd rather have it warranted against leaks etc). I myself have done a few ram windshield's. They can be a pain if you don't know what your are doing. As for the tar, there is a more technical name for it, (polyurethane adhesive). The brand of urethane I recommend is Dintrol 500. If you do plan on doing it yourself let me know, I can give you more insight on the removal and reinstallation. I never use piano wire though. Very easy to scratch the paint on the roofline, and destroy dashboards and a pillar mouldlings. I only used it for Pre 80's cars. If you take it to the dealer they would just call an outside company anyway to replace it, I did dealer work also.

I am having it replaced today. I did it through my ins. Costs me a total of $50 and Someone is coming right out to my house to replace it today. Hope they do a good job. Yeah it was my 97 camry that when they replaced the windshield last time they told me that it was origionally riveted on, and they had to use screws to hold it on when they replaced it. It is the same company that replaced my windshield on my camry. They warranty it aginst leaks and all that good stuff for as long as you own it or a lifetime, somthing like that. I hope I can keep it rock free. Seems like rocks are attracted to everyone in my family.

So far I haven't replaced my windshield on my truck. I'm going to need it eventually, its starting to sunburst (plastic film between the panes of glass is starting to seperate, so it looks white on top of windshield).
