Coolant additive suggestions
I have a 02' 5.9 2wd Quad Cab Longbed with the tow-package.
We will be doing a fair amount of towing this summer.
Any suggestions on addtives I can use to keep the temps down when we are pulling up in the hills?
Coolant?
Engine Oil?
Tranny Oil?
Thanks

additives are a no-no in my opinion. if you want something, get some really god antifreeze...liek the orange or pink ****.
i'm not a fan of any additives...i can't tell you how many cooling systems i;ve flushed, only to realize the bronze tube of stopleak is what was causing their overheating problems in the first place. anyways, i'm not saying that you'r eplanning to throw stop leak in there, but yea...i don't liek the idea of any additives in the cooling system.
for cooler temps, get an efan and/or a low temp thermostat. hell, if you live somewhere warm liek arizona or florida, take the thermostat out..lol

if you do a lot of city driving (likely where you're having the cooling issue) electrical fan for the win. it can be running full speed and keeping your engine cool even at idle, that mechanical fan can't do that.
With the tow package, you should have ample cooling as long as you test your anti-freeze and it's up to spec.
The jury is kinda hung on the e-fan for towing thing. Some people claim that an e-fan doesn't move enough air. I don't buy it, my Flex-A-Lite moves 3300 cfm all the time, whether I'm sitting still in heavy traffic on a 95 degree day or cruising the highway at 75 mph. I always wanted to get one, but it took a day stuck on I-95 for hours, stop & go, stop & go watching the needle get dangerously close to over-heat range. Not even close to that since installing the e-fan.
Although I no longer do any real towing or hauling, I personally would not hesitate to install an e-fan on any gas truck I'd use to do so...

like others said, the e-fan's good. a 180 t-stat will give you a lot lower temp. but back to the quetion about the additive, i used royal purples additive to the coolant, its thin and just like water, but purple, so i didnt see it messing up the cooling system and it actually did drop the temp, not much but about 1 full needle.
