Front U joint Replacement
Ok i have done some searchs on this and cant find any helpful info. I have a 2003 QC, LB, 4x4, 3/4 Ton Ram. My driver side U joint is shot and i really dont feel like bringing it in to get it fixed. Is this a job weekend go getter can do. I do most of my own maintance on my truck, oil, plugs, brakes things like that. Will I be able to handle this or should i leave this up to the professionals. Any help will be great.
Thanks

U joints arent that tough, a press is the easiest way to do tham but they can be knocked out with a hammer and drift if your carefull. I have not been in a late model Dodge driveshaft so I am going from my old 99 model, yours may very somewhat.
remove driveshaft and support both ends, a large vice works well but a couple of blocks of wood work too.Soak the u-joint cups with penetrating oil, I like PB break or Kroil, remove the "C" clips on the inside of the U-joint cups.
using a drift or punch slightly smaller than the u-joint cup, drive the cup through the joint, forcing the opposite cup out of the yoke, when it comes out, do the same to the other side.
Be carefull! It will take quite a bit of force to drive out the cups and you dont want to deform the drive shaft yoke.
The shops around here usually charge around 20.00$ per joint to R&R u-joints. You can change them in an hour or two. Take your time and open the Beer AFTER the driveshaft is re installed! Good Luck!

hey thanks for the info, the u joints im talking about are on the ends of the front anxle though connecting to the wheels. I would assume though that taking apart the assembly is fairly the same as the drive shaft though correct.
thanks again
thanks again
Yes, its the same as changing the front u joint on the tranny side of the rear end drive shaft. When you get one side done, roll it over and start on the other side!
