02 - 05 ..i think ..235 hp stock 4.7 manual tranny owners.........
have always been wondering about this... when im racing out these streets , im shifting at about 5 k rpm into second, 5200 rpm into third and 5 k into 4th ...what about you guys/?? what does an automatic trans shift its gears at?? sometimes i noticed that ( i think i shift pretty fast) when i shift to fast above 5 k rpms i grind sometimes! and im not sure if its because the transmission cant handle the rpm shift point or because i just may not have the clutch in all the way??? lol what do you think?
simply put a synchronized transmission can't shift that fast at high rpms. you will cause damage if you continue. and you must really be bangin gears hard because mine has never ground on me altho i don't beat my truck.
Wind it out til it stops pulling, then shift. That's what I do in my '94 Nissan pickup. 134 horse 4 cyl. It scoots. Of course, I can't really shift too quick with that long *** clunky truck shifter. I can still give a v6 mustang a run for it's money. Only weighs 2,790 pounds.
You're pushing your truck a lot harder than I typically do, most of my shifts are being done in the 3K, occasionally up to 4K range , so I can't really comment. I had always attributed a little grinding on fast shifts to sloppy clutch work, but it may well be as Ben D. noted that the synchonized gears don't do well with fast shifts at higher rpms.
i would explain what a syncrho tranny does and I will but this piece of junk website (sorry guys but this has been going on too long for me to be nice anymore) won't allow me to post more than three lines of comment lol.
Hey Ben D. Your signature says you have a 4.7 HO . Is this due to mods or there a factory option that i am unaware of? Sorry to snipe this thread.

I've got a 03 4.7. I shift mine around the 5k most of the time with Zero trouble. But it only has 135000 miles on it.
