Does any one know if you can buy a 5 speed automatic transmission for a Ram 1500 4.7 V-8. Mine is only 4 speed and im looking to see if there are any mods to make it a 5 speed or if I can just buy one. Just trying to increase those highway MPG's. Thanks

 

You can put a higher gear in the rear but your performance will take a dive...2:73's should do it. Dodges 5-speed auto is really a 4-speed with a "2nd prime"....so you have 1st-2nd-2nd prime-3rd-4th (od). From what I understand 2nd prime is a dedicated kickdown gear with a different ratio..

You may be able to enable that 5th gear with reprogramming. See the comment just before the gear ratio list.

 

I don't know what year you have, but I've got an 03. Mine came with the 545 RFE which is a 5 speed tranny. I think it might be interchangable with the 45 RFE which is a 4 speed.

 

well thats pretty lame. I honoestly dont care about performance any more im just trying to squeeze every MPG out of this beast as I can and figured there might be a better cruising gear out there.
