Ok, I was watching Trucks! one day and they said that every 100 lbs of extra weight digs into your mpgs by 1 mpg per 100 lbs. I have a fiberglass toneau cover on my truck that i am ure if pretty heavy. Could this really be a factor in my lousey mpgs? Has anyone checked with and without a cover and noticed a difference?

 

I doubt that 100 pounds is going to affect you that much, but yeah, if you have a full bed load or are towing something, you should expect your mpg to drop off some.

 

Actually, the cover should increase mpg's by reducing drag. Also, the 100 pounds to an mpg is ridiculous; that means I'm losing 2 mpg's by climbing in the truck.

 

Don't feel bad, if true, I'm less than 20 lbs. away from losing 3 mpg...

 

well, they aren't exactly lying, but they aren't exactly telling the truth. 1 mpg per 100 lb seems like absolute worse case scenario city driving impact (though it still seems like a reach). maybe on a dak or a ranger it would have that much of an impact.

That tonneau (which probably weighs a cpuple hundred) will no doubt hurt ur city mpg. but like pyro said, it reduced drag on highway so it will increase ur mpg there. towing does not hurt your mpg too much because of weight unless you are in a hilly area, it hurts much more because of drag.

guy i know had a 26 foot pull behind trailer and a 34 foot gooseneck. pulled both with his gasser dually f350. pulled hundreds of miles each week, got 6 mpg with the pull behind, and 8 mpg with the gooseneck trailer even though it was heavier because it was more aerodynamic.
