Default What Mod's did you do for towing w/a 4.7?

Hey all I bought a 6 x 10 enclosed trailer last week for a great price but won't be getting it until I get back home from the Catpan. It was one of those buy it now deals and a place to store to for a while. So I'll have about two-three weeks to do some mods to my "Brandie" before I head down to get it. I'm planning on an extra Tranny cooler with a new filter and synthetic fluid switch. I might add an Oil cooler too. I have thought about adding a PML bigger rear cover for the added fluid there too.

What are some mods that you have done to your Rams to get it ready for towing? I’m open to suggestions.

swapped it out for a 5.7...

if you're looking for engine mods, then programmer, intake, and exhaust are the basic ones. but keeping heat down is the best with the tranny cooler, oil cooler, i always ran purple ice in the cooling system too.

switch everything to synthetics

I'd go with gears, the tune-up and tranny cooler you mentioned. I don't think there's a programmer for the 4.7 yet...but with your current bolt-ons and some gears you should be golden.

I towed a 22 ft boat to the FL Keys and back a couple of years ago in July with a completely stock 2002 QC SB 4.7L with out any problems. Bed loaded to the top of the lid and 4 people in the cab. That trailer is should be easy to tow but a trany cooler and oil cooler couldn't hurt.

avoid the common newbie mistakes
of concentrating on HP and temperature
and beef up the braking of both tow unit and trailer,
and the driver's skill at braking

find an empty parking lot
and practice making an initial soft brake application first
that takes the slack out between truck and trailer
before pressing harder to get full brake application

practice this until it is second nature

try to do at least 3 full force
panic stops from at least 50 mph
before getting out in traffic

it is better to have your first
'JackKnife' in an empty parking lot
than on the highway in traffic

think of every 'crazy' thing
you have witnessed other drivers doing in the past

now imagine those same crazy things happening again
but now in front of you pulling that trailer
with cars on your side restricting your steering direction

good luck

slang saying:
Proper Practice Prevents Pi$$ Poor Performance

The Duke of Wellington's advice on practical bravery:
"The greater part of courage is the courage of having done before"

Thanks everyone I'm going with the Tranny cooler filter and Oil cooler for now. Maybe later on the Diff cover but I'll at least change to Synthetics for all.
I'm running Pennzoil 5-30 synthetic because that's what Jiffy lube put in the engine last change and since it was just changed, I'll just do a Royal Purple change to the rest of the truck though.

Stay cool H-
