Default Difference between 07 2500 and the 2500 Heavy duty

I am considering an 07 quad cab short box 4x4 and am wondering if there is a lot of difference between the 2500 and the 2500 Heavy Duty or is it better to step up to the 3500? Thoughts?

I wasn't aware that there was a 2500 and a 2500 HD from Dodge. I know Chevy has (had?) a 1500 and a 1500 HD, but that's the only light/heavy duty version of the same model series that I was aware of. If you need a 3/4 ton, get a 2500. If you need a 1 ton, get the 3500.

There is only one kind of 2500, they are all "Heavy Duty."

The only difference between the 2500 and 3500 is that the 3500 comes with an overload spring, and you can get the 3500 as a dually. If payload is not a big concern of yours, I'd stick with the 2500.

Were he badgings changed mid-model year 2007 or at the start of model year 2008? If it was mid that maybe what you are seeing.

I know the 1500 was '08 but I thought the 2500/3500 was changed before the start of 2008MY.

I like my 2500HD though I wish the payload was a little greater than a ton. Maybe airbags or helper spring are in my future... I did overload it (don't tell anyone) with a pallet of concrete mix - 3280lbs not including the pallet and she squatted badly but the Hemi cruised on without hesitation.

I was standing on the lot Sunday and there was an 07 with just 2500 on the door and beside it was a 2500 with Heavy Duty under the 2500. Both had 5.9's in them so they were early in the year as the 6.7 came out later in 07. If the only difference is the payload then that helps but does anyone know if the brakes are the same size and the axle bearings etc are different. I could ask the salesman but you know what that answer will be! Are the 3500 brakes and axle bearings heavier? I was told they were not and I think they are but I'm not sure.

Brakes and axle bearings are the same between the 2500 and 3500, as is EVERYTHING else EXCEPT for the overload spring and dually option.

ok noob question, so all i need to turn my 05 2500 into a 3500 is a spring swap???? is it really that simple. im from the jeep/toyota world and lost my last toyota due to the frame warranty buy back. so i picked up a full size couldnt beat the price, way cheaper than a 05 taco.
so all it takes is a rear pack swap and new coils up front?

Default 2500 is not a 3500

Gears might be a good idea too... Depends (if you are after the hauling, the towing, or both)...
As there is issue with
A) recommend the deisel if you tow over 10k, but not needed for payload
B) you need to convert to the duallies for payload, although heavier weight rated tires exist, duals make it easier
C) you'd need to put taller gears in (for towing, helps for hauling too).
D) You'd need the helpers for payload increase from 3/4 ton to 1 ton.

So there are lots of things to make a 2500, into a 3500. Add only those things you need for what you want depending on what you plan on using it for... if payload, then yes... duallies and springs... if towing, duallies, springs, and gears.

+1 2500s are the same as Heavy Duty 2500s but the are NOT 3500s.

The differance between the 2500 and 3500 diesels are the overload spring in the rear. Both trucks come with either 3.75 gears or 4.10 gears, The 2500 comes with a aam 10.5 inch rear end standard The 3500 comes with a 11.5 inch aam rear standard. I bought an 07 2500 with the upgraded 11.5 inch rear added firestone airbags and registered it for 12,000 lbs. There are many roads in my area that limit truck traffic to trucks 3/4 ton and under so this is how I got past it.
