Default Royal Purple vs Mobil 1

Question for those of you that switched from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple. I believe HammerZ71 is one of the people I am speak of.

Do you think the benefits of the Royal Purple is worth the difference in price. RP is going to cost about 30% more per change with the WM price of Mobil 1 and the specials at Autozone.

I'm ready for the 12,000 mile oil change and plan to switch to either RP or Mobil 1.

Thanks in advance for the help

I always used Mobil 1, for like fifteen years, but found a solid 1.5-2 mpg increase with RP in the crankcase and diffs of my Grand Cherokee. The truck now has it in the crankcase and is about 1 mpg better. Both engines seem to run a little smoother as well. Not done a change in the truck yet, but the RP also is a lot cleaner looking at change time than the Mobil 1 ever was, prompting me to extend the interval with RP, making up the cost difference...

I have not looked at the 'backup' documentation
but Valvoline Synthetic Oil
is advertising that it is now a superior product and has
'One fourth the wear of Mobil One in testing'

As for Royal Purple
I have seen the dyno tests where they show gains at high rpm
but they are always using a lower viscosity oil
that what they are being compared to
which seems like a trick to me

most lower viscosity oils show dyno gains versus higher viscosity oils
whether they are synthetic or not:

and also

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...oil/index.html

Mobil One is now advertising a 2% MPG gain on their lowest viscosity oil

Thanks for the replies. Hammer I didn't mean to call you out per say, but I saw your post about switching and was wondering what you still thought.

Just an observation, with the new exhaust on my truck I can hear when the mds goes in and out. As I approach 6000 miles on the Mopar oil, the mds seems to be engaging less often. Seems to me if this is true, and if it is true that 5W30 will not let the mds engage, the "slicker" synthetics should help.

Here in the UK, I have just been speaking with my exhaust guy who replaced his Mobile 1with Royal Purple in his Ram.
He too, found a 2-3mpg increase in milleage.
This bears out HammerZ71.
