Default Chipped key?

Does the 2004 ram have a chipped key? or is it the alarm/remote door fob? I had a regular key cut and it will start the truck then it shuts off. I heard it costs $140 bucks from the dealer to get a second key? Is there a cheaper way?

Any help is appreciated.

If your keys that came with the truck are grey, then yes, they are chipped. I think there is a diy for the programing but i dont know.

yea it's chipped. even the black keys have a transponder in them. there is a self program procedure. the key you got now just hasn't been programmed that is why the truck starts then shuts off.

Jimmy, by regular key, I assume you mean the solid metal one you can get at Home Depot? I had one of those just to unlock the doors, it will do the same thing; start up and then shut off.

My truck came with 2 remote keys; great working things, but I really wanted at least 1 key that I could keep in a magnetic key box in case I lock my keys in or lose them while I'm out. I bought a chipped key off of a guy on ebay for about $12, programmed it per his instructions, and it works like a charm.
