Default HELP QUICK? 3.55 vs. 3.92 HEMI 20's. Not Much Time.

Hello All,

I have tried to read through old treads to get an answer, but I feel I dont have a definate answer.

Situation at hand: I have had a handful of 3rd Gen Rams all 4x4 with Hemi and 3.92's.

I am now without a truck and will be buying one of two 2006 Rams tomorrow. I am just looking for a cheap 4x4 Hemi Ram to do some normal truck chores, nothing serious. Both 4x4 with the Hemi. However, one of them has the 3.55's. This truck has the 20's because a customer requested the 17's and so the truck in question got the 20s. Please dont ask who in the world would want the 17's. Anyways, my question is this, since I am used to the 3.92's will I notice a difference? Will it feel like a dog? Better gas mileage? Worth worrying about?

Any and all information would be great especially from someone that has driven both 3.55's and 3.92's. I need to make my decision tomorrow so I can pick one or the other up. Unfortunately neither of them are close enough to go test drive, it is pick one or the other and head that direction.

Thanks in advance.

i have the 3.92, but i haven't driven a 3.55, however, most guys here who've gone to higher gears actually get a small increase in mpg, i do know that most if not all 3.92 trucks have the limited slip which is crap, it will crap out on you. i'm waiting for my rear end to explode, because that's when my wife will let me get a trutrac and 4.56 gears, if your not going to off road that much then try to get one without the lsd

Thanks for the information. The truck with the 3.55s doesnt have anti-spin rear diff.

I honestly am not worried about gas mileage. However, I just asked to see if there was a difference.

I honestly like the truck with the 3.55s better, it is silver which is preferred color and the other is black, second choice. However, with that being said I would rather have silver but I dont want to have a truck with 3.55's if I will notice or think that it feels doggy compared to my others that previously had 3.92s. Thanks.

Why not get the truck you like and just get different gears put in? It doesn't cost that much!

If you intend to change the gears and add an AUBURN or DETROIT TRUE TRAC... then get the OPEN DIFF one... It would not matter which one because you would be changing them out anyway... BUT if you where NOT intending to swap them out... For better MPG and performance... go with the 3.92's.

4.56's are KING though... so if you do upgrade... thats what I would recommend.

SPEED SAFE, AIR RAM

I've got 3.55's and I hate IT!...It feels kinda underpowered at low rpms, under 2.5k and its really bad for towing, you have to push it the metal to overtake someone and your rpms will be quite high.

Or request a build sheet from the dodge website it will list everything that your truck came with from the factory
