Default 10.5" lsd

Well, eventually when i get the money (hopefully my durango sells soon so i get the money) i am going to be putting 4.56s in my 2500 2WD. And im wondering about changing out the LSD at the same time. It has the factory LSD in it now. How good are the factory LSDs? I never hear anyone talk about them. And are there any aftermarket ones out there like Detroit or auburn has for the 10.5 rear end? ive been looking around, and all i found was this AAM Loaded Posi Carrier AAM POSI .

What kind of LSD is the factory one? is it the gears or friction setup? i dont know much about differentials at all. but ive heard the geared diffs are better than the friction ones. someone will have to fill me in on the proper terminology for this stuff.

Factory LSD is weak for any kind of aggressive driver. I believe it works on these little weights that when spun fast enough they flip out and lock the carrier. That's how my silverado factory LSD was. The little clips that are part of the weights don't hold up to the abuse.
Stock AAM is 9.25"
Dteroit TrueTrac is the way to go. Worm gear with no clutch packs and no wearable features.
If you do a search on this forums and on the internet there is much more info available than what you'll find by just asking!

thanks for the info, but i have been searching. everything i find is in regards to the 9.25 rear end, and i have the 10.5 on my 2500.

and now i see that i made a typo and put 9.25 in my first post. my bad.

so i am looking for a worm gear LSD for the 10.5. anybody seen any out there?

The 9.25 inch stock LSD is VERY weak.
Just do a search for C clips or retaining clip issues which is their correct name.
It's not a question of if they will break, rather when!
As for how they work, the stock LSD works with clutches in the 9.25" and not spinning bob weights.
These retaining clips which position and retain the several clutches in the LSD, are a significant weak link as the little W on the end of the clips, snaps off and either destroys your gears or more commonly and more alarmingly, allows the clips to work their way out of their pockets, cutting into the carrier with devestating effects EVERY revolution of the diff.
These effects are metal shavings in the diff and oil, getting distributed throughout the entire axle (dreaded sparklies in the oil) destrroying seals and bearings and worse still, cutting away so much of the carrier, that Dodge usually replace the entire axle when they identify this problem as it's beyond repair!
That is the most usual repair and you prey you have cover, as it's thousands of dollars to do it.
I didn't have cover in the UK, but managed to replace my LSD with a Detroit TruTrac which is a much better unit, before the clips (all 4 were in some stage of failing) cut into the carrier. Please bear in mind that since I have had the truck, service intervals have been made at the correct intervals and I don't power brake or thrash my truck at all.
As for the 10.5 inch LSD..........I really can't comment.
I don't even know if it's built along the same lines as the 9.25" unit.
If I were you though, I would find out for sure and either replace it with a DTT or get good cover.
Hope this helps?
Al.

If you have the factory "locking" differential in your hemi 2500, then you already have the exact same clutch-style posi carrier that is in that link from Moe's. The only aftermarket differential for the AAM 10.5 axle I have seen is this helical gear type: http://www.ronsmachiningservice.com/...roductid=16138. It looks like a strong unit, but it's pricy.

Change the gears if you want to, but don't worry about the carrier, the one you have is fine. BTW, 4.56 gears are a little steep for street use. What size tires will you be using?
