Default Thinking About Trading My 06Dakota For An 07 Ram

Hi everyone!! Im new to the ram forums but like the title says looking to trade my dak for a ram. i have an 06 dak slt club cab with 14,000 miles it has 4.7 v8. Looking at an 07 ram quad cab mineral grey slt 5.7 with 24,314 miles on it, they want 19,930 for it. Is this a good deal? Any common probs on the 07's? I really like the 07 rams. Thanks for the help

No, not a good deal, especially if they beat you up with your trade-in. They are still selling off Brand new leftover 08's for low $20's!

I'd bet they would offer you about $6k for your truck. No lie. Ofcourse they would pay more, but that's my guess what they would try to stick you for. I think an 07 4x4 loaded with 25kmi is worth $17k

Just to give you an idea, I did a 2yr lease on my truck only because I will actually save $1200 in the long run rather than if I financed. Also, I didn't know what was going to come out of the economy. Anyways, My sticker was $37,800. After 2yr lease and 10kmi per year, they estimated my truck is worth $18,200
That 07 is essentiall 2yrs old and has more than my allowable 10kmi per year and yet they want more money. Over $1k more than my buyout. I'm sure the truck wasn't priced as much as mine either. Also, I figure my lease buyout to be $2500 higher than what would be appropriate. I plan to negotiate. Generally you will owe more than your vehicle worth for the first 38-40months of payments

4x4?? if so that price is kinda steap. dealers on average mark up used trucks by atleast 2k so rual of thumb always shoot them a price 2k lower than asking price
at that asking price and all the insentives i would be looking at the bad a$$ 09 ram

Well, it's kinda tough to say if it's a good deal or not. If that's a straight "cash price", then the deal sucks! If they are over allowing for your truck in trade, then maybe not.

We really need all the details to be able to tell you.

To give you an idea, on paper, when I traded my '98 Dodge RCSB 1500 4x4 in on a new '02 Chevy QC Z71, they showed me $23,800 for my trade a good $8k over blue book avg trade. It was 4 years old, had 68k miles on it and I paid $23,400 for it new! Now granted I lifted it and put big tires and a few other mods on it, but still. They showed me paying full sticker of about $33,000 for the Chevy. Did I really pay that for it - NO!

Now when I traded the Chevy in on my current '04 Dodge 1500 QCSB Hemi 4x4 that dealership did the reverse. They started with the sticker of about $34,000 and applied $4500 in rebates off the top. Then another $1500 rebate for using Chrysler credit. Now we were at $28k. I then talked them down another $3500 (plus made them throw in skid plates & tow hooks), so now on paper they were selling me that $34k Dodge for $24,500. So they offered well under KBB avg. trade, actually about KBB dealer wholesale for the Chevy.
But just like the first example, I felt I cut a great deal.

Bottom line is, you can get a brand new leftover '08 Dodge 1500 QCSB Hemi 4x4 for about half the sticker price. Hell, my local dealer ran a full page ad every Sunday in the paper from July till November for just that - any '08 Dodge 1500 on the lot (mega cabs exluded) for 50% off the sticker. So a very well equipped '08 4WD Hemi should be able to be had for about $24-25k if you can still find one on a lot. Naturally 4x2s would be a lot less.
So, like I said, unless they are WAY over allowing on your DAK, the deal sucks...

That's just the starting price...no one in their right mind would pay sticker. You could get that truck for 17.5 out the door easy...and sell the dakota don't trade her in. A low ball private party sell will still be more than any dealer will give you....a trade also makes it easier for a dealer to throw around and hide numbers.

Yeah, but you have to consider the sales tax loss factor if you don't trade the truck in. Since he already paid sales tax on his truck, the amount they pay for his truck is the amount he would save in sales tax. Here in NY, I would save $800 for every $10k a dealer gives for a trade-in because i already paid that to but the previous truck in the first place. So if you think you can get $1500 more on a private sale and get lets say $14k for his truck outright and $12.5 dealer, that would mean you have to pay $1120 in sales tax just to make up that difference.
There's alot more numbers involved as well and yes they like to play numbers games. I used to do it for a living and I am very quick and good with numbers so they will never beat me when it comes to that! Also, the rates are very low the past few weeks, if he can gain just 1% on interest for a 5yr loan on $20k, he can save even more. By the time he ends up selling his truck to a private guy, he'll be back into the higher APR's and the season will be close to over. Dealers are having a hard time selling cars and trucks, you really think it's gonna be easy to sell outright..????? Not a chance.
